Layer 2 Solutions: Scaling the Base Layer
Layer 2 (L2) networks build atop Layer 1 (e.g., Ethereum) for efficient transaction processing.
- Optimistic Rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism): Assume validity by default. ‘Fraud proof’ mechanism allows challenges within a “challenge period” (~7 days). Boosts speed, but introduces withdrawal delays.
- ZK-Rollups (zkSync, StarkNet): Employ zero-knowledge proofs to verify off-chain transactions privately; Offers superior privacy and near-instant finality. ZK-EVMs aim for Ethereum smart contract compatibility.
Cross-Chain Interoperability
Seamless communication and asset transfer between disparate chains is critical.
- Blockchain Bridges: Facilitate asset transfers. Complex, often significant attack vectors targeted in major hacks.
- Interoperability Networks (Polkadot, Cosmos): Designed for native, secure communication. Polkadot uses parachains; Cosmos uses Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC).
