Zcash A Privacy-Focused Cryptocurrency
June 2, 2026Voyager Digital emerged as a promising crypto brokerage, offering easy access and attractive interest rates, only to collapse dramatically in the 2022 crypto winter. Its story warns of risks in unregulated digital asset services.
The Ascent: A User-Friendly Crypto Hub
Launched in 2018, Voyager aimed to simplify crypto investing. It gained popularity for its intuitive mobile app, commission-free trading, and particularly its high-yield interest accounts on various cryptocurrencies. Its public listing (OTCQX: VOYG) lent an aura of legitimacy, attracting users seeking passive income in a booming crypto market.
The Precipitous Fall: Interconnected Risks Unravel
Voyager’s downfall stemmed from significant exposure to Three Arrows Capital (3AC), a prominent crypto hedge fund. Voyager extended a substantial loan, primarily in Bitcoin and USDC, to 3AC. As the crypto market suffered a severe mid-2022 downturn (exacerbated by Terra/LUNA), 3AC faced liquidity issues and defaulted;
The default crippled Voyager’s balance sheet. Facing a liquidity crisis and inability to meet withdrawals, Voyager suspended services. On July 6, 2022, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, freezing user assets.
The Aftermath: Bankruptcy, Acquisitions, and Partial Recovery
The bankruptcy proceedings were complex and protracted. Initial attempts to liquidate or sell Voyager’s assets saw bids from FTX US and later Binance.US. The Binance.US acquisition, though approved, faced regulatory hurdles and was abandoned.
Users became unsecured creditors. After legal battles and asset recovery, a distribution plan was approved. Users received partial recovery, often significantly less, in crypto or fiat. This reinforced ‘not your keys, not your coin’.
Lessons from Voyager’s Collapse
- Counterparty Risk: Reliance on third-party custodians exposes users to the financial health and risk management of those entities.
- “Not Your Keys, Not Your Coin”: The importance of self-custody for long-term crypto holdings was starkly demonstrated.
- Due Diligence: Investors must thoroughly vet centralized platforms, scrutinizing lending practices, reserves, and regulatory compliance.
- Regulatory Gaps: The Voyager saga underscored the urgent need for clearer regulatory frameworks for crypto lending and brokerage services.
Voyager’s journey from a promising platform to bankruptcy is a cautionary tale of unchecked leverage, interconnected risks, and the perils of the unregulated crypto frontier. It offers vital lessons for users and regulators on transparency, robust risk management, and responsible practices in digital assets.
